The beautiful Cheshire village of Prestbury, tucked away next to the River Bollin with a fine view of the Pennine foothills, can be dated all the way back to Anglo Saxon times, with its original name of Preosta Burgh meaning ‘dwelling of the priests’.
Come 1066 and the start of the Norman conquests of England, the parish formed the epicentre of 35 townships… and you can still see evidence of a 12th-century Norman chapel in the grounds of the church.
Much of the village is now a designated conservation area with some incredible examples of architecture to be found, including St Peter’s Church, which is Grade I-listed, as well as red brick and black and white properties from the 15th to the 17th centuries.
Of course, while these historical buildings are still very much in situ and the picturesque nature of the township has certainly been preserved, Prestbury has undergone some serious development over the years, ribboning out of the village to provide space for substantial building construction after 1945.
However, one of Prestbury’s defining characteristics is its low housing density and you’ll find many big garden plots in the village centre, helping to create a truly distinctive look and feel to the locale.
