The first mention of Knutsford is as Cuntesford in the Domesday Book of 1085, so this Cheshire market town has a truly rich and illustrious history and, in fact, grew to be one of the most important towns in all of Cheshire, drawing in the crowds from all over the county.
Architecturally, Knutsford is particularly interesting, with beautiful Victorian houses and cobbled streets (which proved to be the inspiration for Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel Cranford), hundreds of listed buildings to be found throughout the town, and quite remarkable Italianate style buildings designed by Richard Harding Watt in the early 20th century.
Minarets, towers and domes feature heavily in Watt’s architectural designs, and these contrast very interestingly with more post-war developments… so walking through the town can be quite the marvel indeed!
